Water apples are native to southeast Asia. They have a thin, edible skin, which looks waxy and turns pink as the fruit ripens. The flesh is divided into 4 sections, each with a single seed. The flesh is firm and white.

There are a wide variety of water apples. The ripe colors can vary from light green to pink, red, or brown. They generally have a mild flavor and crisp texture. They are either eaten raw or added to salads.
