The sapodilla looks like a soft, elongated, tan egg. The skin should be peeled with a knife before eating. Each segment of flesh contains a shiny black seed. The texture is gritty like a pear. The sapodilla has a complex flavor which resembles a pear. It is important to eat sapodillas just as they reach maturity. Unripe or overwripe fruit are unpleasant and inedible.

Market and storage tips — The unpeeled fruit should smell fragrant and be slightly firm when pressed lightly. If the fruit is still slightly unripe, you can wait a few days for it to ripen. Over-ripe fruit should be rejected. For provisioning, buy unripe fruit and store in a cool, dry place out of the sun until ripe.
