The rambutan is related to the lychee, and has a similar fruit. The skin is fairly thick, covered with soft "hairs", and is available in red or golden colored varieties. There is no sap in the skin. The flesh is sweet and white. It surrounds an oval seed, and may cling to the seed in some cases. It is a good source of vitamin C.
The rambutan is eaten fresh. Twist the skin with both hands to release the fruit. Rambutan is not so juicy as to drip while you eat it and will not make a mess of your hands. An altogether civilized fruit. We did not attempt to eat the seeds.
