The mangosteen is very difficult to grow and bruises easily if roughly handled. It has a thick rigid skin, dark purple in color. The interior contains 6 or 7 segments of juicy white flesh, each containing a large dark seed. The flesh is sweet and slightly tart.

The skin can be opened by slight pressure on each side, near the stem. The fruit has a fine taste. We never saw mangosteen served other than as a fresh fruit. We popped each segment into our mouths, ate around the seed, and spit it out. It was good eating. It is unlikely that you would choose to take mangosteen on a long passage, as it would not keep well.
