Mine Snake

The rattlesnake I am holding was found in the mine shaft behind me; at the San Joaquin Experimental Range (SJER), U.S. Forest Service, O'Neals, California.
This is the same mine where Ben Glading (California Department of Fish & Game) observed California quail going in for drinking water; which gave him the idea of building "gallinaceous guzzles" designed to trap rainwater for wildlife.
